Food Security: Linking Farmers to Markets
1145 - 1345hrs

(Venue: Kamal Mahal)

The MDG on hunger requires that the proportion of people suffering from hunger be halved between 1990 and 2015. Behind this apparently simple statement lies much complexity: the food intake required to remove hunger is generally recognised to differ between rural and urban areas; the problem is not only one of supply of food (and the composition of supply), but of the reliability of supply, and of access: despite the fact that food is produced in rural areas, food security in many countries is higher in urban areas where power to access is higher. One of the reasons underlying the grim situation in Asia, South Asia in particular is poor farmer-market linkages.

This session proposes to deliberate on multi-stakeholder partnerships in making farmer-market linkages more efficient, provide better returns to farmers for their produce, and also improve distribution system in such a way to increase food security and not just serve the urban markets.

Partnerships in Action: Best Practices
1445 - 1645hrs

(Venue: Kamal Mahal)

Multi-stakeholder partnership is drawing belief of many based on sparse demonstration in variety of sectors across different partnership models the world over. By sharing the skills, resources and expertise of each sector, and working in collaboration at local, national or international levels such partnerships have the potential to garner constructive and innovative solutions to sustainable development concerns. But although common ground has been reached there is still a need to develop plausible and convincing concepts for business sector involvement in sustainable development. This session will drive the panelists to respond to this need.

Sustainability in Construction: Foundation for Growth
0930 - 1145hrs
(Venue: Kamal Mahal)

With the levels of current and anticipated growth it will be essential for new infrastructure developments in Asia to be built in such a way that their impact on the local, regional and global environment is minimised, and that environmental sustainability is built in from the start. Much can be done to improve environmental performance through well-informed design. It makes good sense to do so because of the cost savings that will accrue over time. This plenary session will highlight the key challenges of sustainable construction and discuss solutions that are socially, environmentally and economically feasible and can lay the foundations for socio-economic growth.

Responsible Mining: Sharing Value
1145 - 1400hrs
(Venue: Kamal Mahal)

Mining alters economic, environmental and social situations no matter where it occurs. Although some degree of disturbance is inevitable even in the best-managed mines, nearly all negative social and environmental impacts are avoidable if companies operate according to the best possible standards. The session will hold discussions on how negative impacts can be minimised and positive impacts enhanced through responsive practices and initiatives of the industry where the gain can be shared equitably.

Sustainable Financing: Fostering Inclusive Growth
1500 - 1700hrs
(Venue: Kamal Mahal)

While sustainable financing is about spurring economic development and helping low-income communities and families build more secure livelihoods, yet the emphasis on business and profitability is important for several reasons. It means that a company's business becomes part of corporate mainstream thinking and activities. It also means that unlike corporate philanthropy, sustainable investments that realize their goal of profitability have no fixed budgetary limits.

The challenges are numerous, substantial and interrelated. The goal of providing financial services to those excluded is for most Asian countries a very ambitious mid-term goal. The set of measures to increase financial inclusion is as complex as the constraints that need to be addressed.
