I watched this documentary on Netflix last night after hearing so many good things about it. This is the first Indian documentary to win an Oscar in the Documentary Short Film category, and that should be reason enough for you watch it. However, if that’s not enough to convince you then let me tell you about the theme – it shares the beautiful story of a couple and their relationship with their adopted child – an elephant calf.
The film shares the story of a couple named Bomman and Bellie who care for an orphaned and injured baby elephant (Raghu) inside the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The unlikely trio forge an unbreakable bond and the film shares how the couple work to help the baby recover and survive.
This movie sheds light on challenges facing elephant conservation. With poaching and habitat loss threatening the survival of the elephants, it highlights the urgent need for action and inspiring efforts of those who work relentlessly to protect them. The film also serves as a document of the gorgeous natural landscape of Mudumalai, and the connection between the land and its people.
The film was praised for highlighting the couple’s efforts at wildlife conservation as it featured moving scenes that showcased the bond forged between the animals and their human caretakers. It is a beautiful story of hope, unusual families and the human-wildlife connection. The film was elevated by stunning cinematography.
So who will this interest? People empathizing with animals and environmentalists for sure and the general public.
